Science Laboratories

Jaffna College has been well-known not just in Jaffna but also nationwide for its well-equipped science laboratories. The College has separate laboratories for Chemistry, Physics and Biology. The Chemistry and Physics laboratories are located on the western side of the Quadrangle while the Biology laboratories are housed on the upper floor of the YMCA Block. The science laboratories have a long and inspiring history. At these laboratories, many generations of students of Jaffna College and the Jaffna College Undergraduate Department learnt firsthand the practical dimensions and applicational aspects of science and technology by conducting and observing various experiments. The teachers of the College run these laboratories with the aim of kindling in the student a curiosity for scientific innovation and creativity beyond what the student learns in the national curriculum. Many exhibitions conducted at these laboratories drew the attention of students from neighboring schools, the members of the wider community and the media. It is noteworthy that these laboratories also functioned as the first laboratories of the Jaffna Campus of the University of Sri Lanka when it was established in 1974. Undergraduates from all over the country benefitted from the facilities available at these laboratories when Jaffna College was home to the Science Streams of the Jaffna Campus.
