ICT lab
Jaffna College is considered one of the pioneering schools in Jaffna for Computer Science. Mr. N. A. Vimalendran, former teacher who later became the Principal, played a key role in initiating Computer Science as a new subject at Jaffna College in the early 1980s. An elementary course in Computer Science was started in 1982. Mr. M. Thavajothyrajah, an alumnus of the College who was involved in computer business in Peking, China and the USA, generously gifted the first computer which was worth more than US$ 15, 000 at the time. This computer was installed in an air-conditioned room located on the top floor of the Administration Block. Thus began the story of the Computer Lab of Jaffna College. The students of Jaffna College learnt their basic computer skills in this laboratory which rendered its services even under the trying circumstances of the civil war when the Jaffna peninsula did not have access to electricity. In the late 1990s, the laboratory catered to the needs of the wider community, when Jaffna College initiated an outreach program in Computer Literacy for the benefit of teachers, school administrators and public servants at Vaddukoddai and the neighboring villages. With the introduction of Computer and IT-related subjects in the national curriculum, the lab had to cater to the needs of an increased student population. The College then decided to build a new IT lab with more computer equipment and internet facilities. In June 2024, a new state-of-the-art Information Technology lab was declared open by the Rt. Rev. Dr. V. Pathmathayalan, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Jaffna College. This new laboratory located in the Bishop Kulandran Block on the western side of the campus was built with the generous funding by the Trustees of Jaffna College Funds in Boston, USA.
